42 per cent of all ticket purchases made via phones and tablets.
Marvel superhero flick The Avengers opened in America over the weekend, and film ticketing site Fandango claims the release generated its highest ever ticket sales volume in 12 years.
42 per cent of all Avengers ticket sales came from mobile, generating 68,000 sales per hour to break the previous record held by The Hunger Games which secured 22 per cent of mobile sales in March.
Rick Butler, exec VP and general manager of Fandango, said: "Fandango continues to see millions of fans taking advantage of our many conveniences and innovations to guarantee their seats, particularly with movies in hot demand like The Avengers.
"Our record-setting mobile sales affirm that mobile has clearly transitioned from just an alternative way to buy tickets to a primary choice for many weekend moviegoers. As of Monday, the film is still going strong, with all signs pointing to staggering ticket sales in the weeks to come."
