Ten per cent of tablets will ship with 3G in 2013

Rising to 25 per cent by 2017.

Analyst DisplaySearch has completed its Tablet Quarterly report, which looks at current trends within the tablet market.

It says global tablet shipments to hit 330m by 2017, and that devices with cellular connectivity will comprise an increasing proportion of these sales and the decade wears on: a quarter by 2017.

Shipments of tablets with ARM processors are predicted to grow year-on-year in for 2011 to 59.9 million units. ARM is expected to dominate until 2013, which will see the rise of x86 processors and Windows 8 devices, according to the report.

Richard Shim, DisplaySearch senior analyst, said: "The tablet PC and notebook PC markets are on a collision course as both product categories continue to evolve and improve on their respective weaknesses.

"As such, each product category will influence the other over time. Still, the incumbent platforms have inherent advantages in the early years."

The report claims Apple will receive new challenges from other brands as PC firms branching out into Windows, x86 and ARM.

Amazon has added fresh pressure to the market too with its Kindle devices causing Microsoft and Intel to reconsider consumer designs.

Jim McGregor, chief technology strategist for In-Stat, said: "Unlike notebook and netbook PCs, where consumers have chosen products based on the processor or PC vendor, consumers of new mobile devices care more about what they can do with the devices, which is associated more with the device applications and services."
