Releasing an SDK so Microsoft's developer community can dive into Telefonica's suite of APIs.
Telefonica has teamed up with Microsoft to release an SDK for the latter's .NET developers that will let them tap into the APIs being made available by the operator's BlueVia initiative.
Microsoft's developers - including Windows Phone 7 developers, but also those working on PC, web and TV applications - will be able to use SMS, advertising and contextual user data pulled from Telefonica in their services.
"Our partnership with Microsoft will accelerate BlueVia's reach and extend our presence beyond mobile into PC, TV and gaming platforms," says Vivek Dev, director of global new services at Telefonica.
The partnership was announced this morning at an event in London, where three developers showed off the results of being given early access to the new tools. They included Medianet with its Taxistop service, Schakra's GoGoStat Connect, and Cooliris' LiveShare.
"This relationship with Telefonica is an incredible opportunity for our worldwide community of developers to build mobile applications that serve millions of customers," says Microsoft's VP of consumer channels, communications sector Tony Mestres.

Telefonica is starting to make bigger noise around the BlueVia initiative, which it's pitching as a very un-telco-like drive to open up APIs to external developers without charging them for the privilege. For example, developers who make apps that use text messaging don't have to buy SMS' in bulk, but instead get a revenue share on every one sent through their services.
