Teens want BBC iPlayer on their mobiles

Teens want BBC iPlayer on their mobiles

A survey by CSS Insight has found that a third of UK teens want to access the BBC's iPlayer on their phones.

CSS suggests that this shows that a mobile iPlayer will be the next driver for mobile internet growth here in the UK.

Which is fine, but slightly puzzling, as iPlayer is already available for mobile users. Well, some of them.

The BBC's own FAQ lists 13 handsets that are capable of accessing the iPlayer over Wi-Fi and/or 3G. They include Apple's iPhone, Nokia's N96, 5800 and N95, and other handsets from Samsung, Sony Ericsson and HTC.

The question is whether these high-end phones are owned by many teenagers, though.

In the meantime, CSS says its survey also found that Facebook and Twitter are currently huge drivers for teenagers' mobile internet use, with a third accessing the social networks from their handsets.

"The web is revolutionising the way people use mobile phones," says analyst Paolo Pescatore. "Forget music downloads and video - social networking is what people want. Media owners and operators will have to find new ways to make money from their assets."
