Taptu takes a turn into social news aggregation

New iOS app opens up new direction for mobile search firm.

A few months ago, mobile startup Taptu described itself in press releases as a 'search and discovery engine'.

Now, post Mitch Lazar assuming the CEO role, the firm says it's a 'social media and technology company' - indicating a shift in its approach.

That shift can also be seen in the company's latest app for iPhone and Android: My Taptu.

It's a social news aggregator, launching today, which blends traditional RSS feeds with links from users' friends on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Taptu hasn't dumped its mobile search tech, of course: the application uses it to sort news into individual streams, helping users pick through the clutter.

"MyTaptu is a clever yet simple social news aggregator that we believe our customers will return to many times a day," says Lazar.

"We set out to give our customers the one-stop-app for the latest news and views from all the best sources, including their own friends and family, and that’s exactly what we’ve achieved."
