Tapjoy nibbles into movie market with Popcornflix

Moves beyond gaming to add virtual rewards into new Popcornflix GOLD app.

Mobile app monetisation network Tapjoy has a particular focus on the games space, with clients including Funzio, Oufit7 and Papaya, but the firm is expanding into the film realm of the entertainment market now.

The move kicks off through a partnership with Screen Media Ventures-owned Popcornflix – an online movie streaming platform – to integrate virtual rewards (Popcornflix Points) into a new GOLD app for Android.

Starter points will be generated when the app is downloaded, but users can top up their rewards by interacting with the in-app ads to unlock premium content.

Mihir Shah, CEO, Tapjoy, said: "The expansion will drive discovery and engagement for consumers and in turn, provide new, targeted opportunities for advertisers and developers."

Gary Delfiner, senior VP, Screen Media Ventures, said: "We see the use of virtual rewards as a way to create ‘virtual value’ for our content in the increasingly competitive digital world.

"Mobile app developers have proven that the freemium model works, with many consumers exchanging virtual rewards for digital goods. This is the first application of its kind. We want to continue to keep Popcornflix on the cutting edge."
