Symbian Belle to make its debut with three new Nokia smartphones

Nokia 700, Nokia 701 and Nokia 600 will be the first to feature latest software update.

Nokia's Symbian Anna software update has only just started rolling out to smartphones, but the company has already unveiled the next version: Symbian Belle.

New features include an increase in the number of homescreens from three to six; five different sizes for live widgets; a pull-down menu and taskbar to access notifications; and improved web browsing. There is also a new 'single-tap NFC sharing and pairing capability' to help share contacts, videos and photos with other NFC-enabled devices.

Symbian Belle will make its debut in three new Nokia smartphones unveiled today.

The Nokia 700 (pictured) is the company's smallest smartphone yet, but includes a 1GHz processor, 3.2-inch touchscreen, 2GB of internal memory and a five-megapixel camera. Meanwhile, the Nokia 701 majors on its bright 3.5-inch touchscreen, active noise cancellation, 1GHz processor and eight-megapixel camera.

Finally, the Nokia 600 will be a more affordable handset with a music focus: FM radio and beefy speakers. It will cost less than the other two new devices, but will still include a 1GHz processor and five-megapixel camera.

"Symbian Belle and the three new handsets we are launching today show our commitment to continue delivering Symbian products that allow people to choose what is most important to them in terms of user experience, design, functionality and price," says Nokia VP Illari Nurmi. "These will not be last products or updates we will deliver on Symbian."

When will Symbian Belle be available for existing handsets? Nokia says that it will announce at a later date when the software will be preloaded on newly-shipping versions of its N8, E6, E7, X7, C7, C6-01 and Oro smartphones, but has not indicated when it will be an over-the-air update for those devices that have already been sold.
