So says iSuppli, which went into its virtual shed and pulled one apart. Virtually.

HTC's Android-powered G1 smartphone, which is being sold by T-Mobile USA for $179, costs about $144 to make according to research from iSuppli.

However, the 'bill of materials' doesn't include software, R&D or manufacturing costs, and wasn't based on actual physical examination of the devices itself - the workings were all in Excel.

Earlier this year iSuppli said iPhone 3G cost $173 to build in materials and manufacturing expenses.
