String unveils 'super fast' AR technology for iOS

Offers developers the ability to create vision-based AR apps more quickly than before.

UK-based String has been in stealth mode for a while, but launched formally today at the AR Summit in London.

Earlier this year it released the free AR Showcase app for iOS, and was featured in News Corp’s “The Daily” iPad app.

Now it's appealing to developers to start making augmented reality apps using visual triggers (rather than the location-based stuff that works on browsers like Layar).

This is something that Qualcomm has also been helping to push, with its Unity-built SDK.

String's developer kit starts at £79, although the firm says it can also enhance its service with consultancy and end-to-end solutions.

It's already signed a partnership with Brighton based Digicave and Norwegian company Labrat.

Alan Maxwell, CEO of String, said: “We are delighted to officially launch String to the world. We’d like to thank everyone for their support and interest. There's been huge anticipation from both the global development community and international brands.

"We can’t wait to see the ideas that emerge, and we are working hard to develop the technology even further, so watch this space.”
