Steam mobile app hits iOS and Android

Valve's digital games download platform goes from PC to mobile in the form of a closed beta iPhone and Android app.

Steam is the standard bearer for streaming and downloadable PC play, and has over 40m accounts worldwide with a database of more than 1,800 titles.

This free download allows smartphone owners to chat with their Steam friends, browse community groups and user profiles, read video game news and keep track of the latest Steam sales.

“The Steam app comes from many direct requests from our customers,” said Valve co-founder and president Gabe Newell.

“Seeing which of your friends are online and playing a game, sending quick messages, looking at screenshots for an upcoming game, or catching a sale – these are all features customers have requested.

“Mobile is changing the way people interact, play games and consume media, and the Steam app is part of our commitment to meet customer demands and expand the service functionality of Steam to make it richer and more accessible for everyone.”

Great to see Valve finally rolling out their platform for mobile. With so many other gaming companies in mobile they will have their work cut out for them although they do already have a large user base. Seeing how they position themselves in mobile compared to desktop will be interesting.
