Starbucks rolls out mobile payments

Pay-by-barcode offered across nearly 6,800 US stores.

Customers using the Starbucks Card Mobile app on their iPhone, iPod Touch or BlackBerry can now select "touch to pay" and hold up the barcode on their device screen to the 2-D scanner at the register. No Android yet.

The action deducts money loaded on the app PayPal or credit card.

Starbucks is using its own custom-built technology to enable the 2-D mobile barcode scans, having rejected NFC for lacking industry support at present.

Brady Brewer, vice president of Starbucks Card and brand loyalty, said the project was a reaction to the fact that one in five transactions are made using a Starbucks Card, and the observation that customers frequently use their smartphones while queuing.

The scheme had previously been piloted at Target stores and various San Francisco, Seattle and New York Starbucks locations.
