Starbucks launches first two iPhone apps

And one of them lets you pay for your coffee... but only in a few places.

If Starbucks had launched an iPhone app this time last year, it probably would have been a virtual, slurpable cup of coffee. iLatte.

Thankfully, the company kept its powder dry, and has now launched something much more useful: an iPhone app that lets customers pay for their coffee.

It's called Starbucks Mobile Card, and for now is just an experiment - it only works in a few test stores in Seattle and the Bay Area according to MocoNews.

Users take their iPhone in, order their coffee and charge it via the app.

Meanwhile, there's a separate app called MyStarbucks which helps people find their nearest outlet (insert your own joke about 'simply walk for two minutes in a city' here), as well as a virtual drink-builder that counts fat and calories.

"We think it’s really talking to our customers in new ways," Starbucks chief information officer Stephen Gillett tells the Wall Street Journal. Depending on the success of the pilot scheme, the payment app may roll out elsewhere in the future.
