Starbucks has processed 42m mobile payments

M-commerce proving more full fat than skinny latte.

US coffee behemoth Starbuck launched its pay with mobile service just 15 months ago, and reported 26m users at the end of December 2011.

Now, according to Venturebeat, the firm has added a further 16m in three months.

The Starbucks mobile payment app in available for iPhone, BlackBerry and Android. Users load money into it and pay for items by displaying a 2D barcode, which is scanned at the register as if it were a card.

It's available in the US, Canada and the UK.

The service has had a missed reception. Starbucks has received plaudits for creating an app that's simple to use and understand, and is not dependent on limited-availability tech like NFC. But some have questioned just how much of an improvement it is on using a plastic loyalty card.

Starbucks' SVP and general manager Adam Brotman told VentureBeat. “We want to innovate in that area before others catch up…There has been such a seismic shift (in digital), that we needed to pull it all together and make it priority.”
