Starbucks decided against waiting for NFC to roll out in favour of creating its own mobile version of its Starbucks Card payments system in January.
The resulting app – first available for iOS and BlackBerry – can be loaded with credit and also allows the user to manage his/her Starbucks Card balance, view My Starbucks Rewards status and find nearby stores.
By the end of March Starbucks had processed more than 3m mobile payments via its Starbucks Card Mobile app for iPhone and BlackBerry.
Starbucks for Android is now available exclusively on the Android Market, and has been optimised specifically for Android 2.1 or above.
The system will be available to use in 9,000 locations from July.
