Starbucks brings payment app to UK

The coffee chain has already trialled the service in the US, and is now preparing to bring it to 700 of its branches across the UK and Ireland.

Starbucks decided against waiting for NFC to roll out in favour of creating its own mobile version of its Starbucks Card payments system last January.

The resulting app can be loaded with credit and also allows the user to manage his/her Starbucks Card balance, view My Starbucks Rewards status and find nearby stores.

By the end of March Starbucks had processed more than 3m mobile payments via its Starbucks Card Mobile app for iPhone and BlackBerry.

It claims the app can reduce transaction time by ten seconds.

Brian Waring, of Starbucks UK and Ireland, said: “Because our customers want it, we have created our own custom-built mobile payment technology rather than waiting for the near field communication technology which is currently not widely available.

"We’re always thinking of new ways to add value to our customers and give them more reasons to choose Starbucks.”
