Stalemate in US smartphone platform wars

Android's share stands still after 18 months of surge.

New figures from Nielsen say Google's OS is still more popular than Apple's, but no more than it was in March.

Android surged from 15 per cent in June 2010 to 37 per cent in March this year, with a clear lead over iOS.

But since then it's been 'as you were' with Google stuck on 36 per cent, Apple on 26 per cent and RIM at 23 per cent.

Overall smartphone now represent 37 per cent of all US mobile phones.

The study also found that iPhone owners remain more voracious when it comes to apps, music and video although – curiously – individual Android users consume significantly more data.

A Nielsen analysis of nearly 65,000 cellphone bills found Android owners consuming an average of 582 MB of data each month, compared with 492 MB for iPhone owners.
