St Andrews gets its own official iPhone golf game

The Old Course is out just in time for this year's Open Championship.

Cobra Mobile is releasing an official iPhone game for St Andrews Links, called The Old Course.

The game, which is due out this week with a 59p price point, is the first time the venerable golf course has appeared in its own game.

It comes just before the start of this year's Open Championship, which will be played at St Andrews.

The top-down game has accurately-mapped versions of each hold on the course, as well as iPhone-optimised touch controls.

Players can boast about their best scores on Facebook, while the game also offers Bluetooth multiplayer, and ties into ngmoco's Plus+ connected community.

"The Old Course and St Andrews Links brand is recognised around the world and is something we are increasingly developing in digital media," says Izzy Cameron, brand development manager at St Andrews Links Trust.

"The game offers an excellent likeness of the Old Course and is enjoyable to play."

Meanwhile, Cobra Mobile boss Mark Ettle says the project has been just as positive for his company.

"It's been a dream to work with St Andrews Links and to bring the Home of Golf alive and onto iPhone."

In non-gaming news, golfing body The R&A has released a separate iPhone app for this year's Open Championship.

It will stream live video from three holes on the course, as well as offering a real-time leaderboard, guide to the course, video highlights and radio commentary.
