Square raises $100m

Bumper third round values mobile credit card reader firm at $1bn.

According to the WSJ, the funding was led by tech friendly VC Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and means that its analyst Mary Meeker will join the board of Square.

It all makes Square one of the hungriest of all Silicon Valley start-ups, bringing the running total of investment to $130 million in just eight months.

And don't forget that in April, Visa made an undisclosed investment in the company.

Square's peripheral plugs into the headset/microphone jack, and allows merchants to process credit card transactions via an app.

Its boss is Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey.

In Q1, Square did $66 million in payment volume, though it recently abandoned charging for transactions in favour of a rev share.

According to the WSJ, it is now processing $4 million in transactions per day.
