Square: preparing overseas launch?

Comments by CEO suggest payments firm in ready to expand outside the US.

Square has a good claim to being the most hyped mobile start-up in the world right now. Its credit card dongle, which turns any smartphone or tablet into a payments processor, has around two million users.

It also offers the Pay By Square service which enables a user to ping a merchant ahead of arrival and say their name to complete the transaction.

The firm reckons its transactions value is now on target to hit $6 billion this year.

Now, CEO Jack Dorsey has hinted to Bloomberg that Square is ready to expand into overseas markets.

“We just keep building, and we’re excited because we’re going outside the US soon,” he said. Square hired Alyssa Cutright as VP of international in March this year.

The firm will face competition from PayPal, which launched much later than Square but is available in the US, Canada, Hong Kong and Australia.

And in Europe iZettle is established in the Nordics, while CardEase and mPowa are active in the UK
