Sprint preparing NFC payment service

Sprint preparing NFC payment service

Wants to launch this year ahead of big US operator rivals.

According to Bloomberg, Sprint is working with payment networks and handset makers to build the service, and wants to get it live before the Isis joint venture by Verizon Wireless, AT&T and T-Mobile USA.

The latter may not launch until 2012.

Bloomberg's report claims Sprint might reject a rev share in favour or coupon sales and ads, and that payments would be made via credit card top ups.

However, the service would also add to the fragmentation that threatens to hobble a sector that already faces issues around security and retail acceptance.

There are around 150,000 US merchant locations enabled for NFC payments today, but there need to be many more, and the public need education on how to use them.
