Spotify closing in on US launch?

Streaming music service said to be in talks with two major labels

Spotify could be a step closer to its much-anticipated US launch, with reports suggesting it is nearing an agreement with Sony Music and has the support of at least one other.

The New York Post says its sources indicate that an announcement is due 'within days', though Spotify itself has played down the report, saying online that negotiations were 'going well' and that it had 'nothing to confirm at this stage'.

Spotify executives spent much of 2010 promising to launch its service in the US by the end of the year. However, it didn't come to pass, primarily because label execs are very nervous about the firm's free ad-supported desktop model.

More than 750,000 people are now paying to use streaming music service Spotify in Europe, according to CEO Daniel Ek.
