SPB launches live TV app for Android

More than 100 digital TV channels from around the world, complete with EPG and picture-in-picture.

Russian mobile developer SPB Software has released its SPB TV application for Android handsets. It offers more than 100 live TV channels from around the world, with no subscription in sight.

The app, which is being sold for $9.95, is already available for Windows Mobile and Symbian handsets. It includes a full week's TV guide, calendar reminders for specific shows, and a picture-in-picture mode to preview one channel while watching another.

Although available to buy in those countries where the Android Market store allows paid downloads, it seems SPB is keen to offer the app through mobile operators too.

"SPB is very pleased with the fact that we can offer mobile carriers an equal solution, a unique powerful application for Windows Mobile, Symbian and Android platforms," says CEO Sebastian-Justus Schmidt.

The Android version requires the Android 1.5 software update, as well as a "reliable" 3G or Wi-Fi connection to stream the channels.
