Government will consider other uses for its digital terrestrial spectrum
Spain is to abandon plans to rollout terrestrial mobile TV services, according to local reports (via broadbandtvnews.com).
Bernando Lorenzo, director general of telecoms at Spain's Ministry of Industry, said that an appropriate business model had not been forthcoming and that if there is not an increase in demand the DVB-H spectrum would be used for other services.
Despite a lot of hype, commercial terrestrial mobile TV in almost all its forms has been a slow burn, particularly in Europe, though there has been no shortage of trials.
There have always been questions marks over who pays for DVB-H services, with a complex value chain that includes mobile operators, broadcasters, handset makers and equipment suppliers.
