Sony taking on Amazon's Kindle with three new ebook readers

Top-end Daily Edition model will have 3G connectivity from AT&T in the US.

The battle for the hearts of the digital literati is hotting up, with Sony announcing three new ebook readers yesterday, designed to take on Amazon's Kindle.

Well, one of them is. The Daily Edition will go head-to-head with Amazon's device, using 3G connectivity from AT&T Wireless to allow users to download ebooks and newspapers over the air. Kindle's connectivity comes from rival US operator Sprint.

The device has a seven-inch screen, and will be on sale in the US before Christmas with a price tag of $399. The device uses Sony's EPUB ebook format.

News of competition for Kindle will please book publishers, although European consumers won't be so chuffed: no plans have been announced to launch the Daily Edition on this side of the Atlantic, mirroring Amazon's strategy.

Sony's other two new ebook readers will cross the pond, though. The five-inch Sony Pocket and six-inch Reader Touch will connect to PCs or Macs to sideload ebooks on, and will cost $199 and $299 respectively in the US.
