Sony Pictures Television International is planning to launch Animax mobile content in Europe.
Animax, a dedicated animé TV channel targeted at 15-29 year olds, was launched by SPTI this week in Hungary, Romania, the Czech Republic and Slovakia following the rebranding of A+, which it acquired last year.Talks are currently under way to launch the channel in the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and France, with mobile content based on hit shows like Inuyasha, Yu Yu Hakusho, Gravitation and Trigun in the pipeline.
SPTI reckons animé is enjoying growing terrestrial airtime in France, Italy, Spain, Germany and the UK – all markets in which it is 'actively exploring opportunities to establish Animax across multiple platforms – TV, mobile and as a VOD service'.
Ross Hair, SPTI’s SVP of international networks, said: "Today marks the first step in the expansion of Animax in Europe where we believe it has enormous potential as a multiple platform offering via TV, PC or mobile."
Animax is already an established brand name in Asia and Latin America and is one of SPTI’s most successful channels, airing 24 hours a day in 36 million homes across 38 countries and in 11 languages.
