Sony Ericsson to go smartphone only in 2012

Feature phones out, as Android devices take over 80 per cent of current sales.

Sony Ericsson has announced the smartphone-only decision following the on-going fall in feature phone sales and in total device shipments.

The firm shipped just 9.5 million units in Q3 2011 compared to Q3 2010, in which it shipped 10.4 million units.

However, smartphone sales grew over 20 per cent in six months. They now represent over 80 per cent of all SE’s device sales.

The figures come following last week's news of Sony's desire to split up with Ericsson and focus on smartphone development to be linked in with its tablets and consoles.

Bert Nordberg, president and CEO of Sony Ericsson, said: "We delivered a solid €73 million improvement in income before taxes as we rebounded from the previous quarter with a 33 per cent increase in sales.

Android-based Xperia smartphone sales now account for more than 80 percent of sales and we have shipped 22 million Xperia smartphones to date.  We will continue to invest in the smartphone market, shifting the entire portfolio to smartphones during 2012.”

Sony Ericsson says sales for the quarter were approximately €1.6 billion, pretty much matching the figures for 2010 with just a small loss.

Net income during the quarter improved by €50 million although this isn't an achievement as it decreased by €49 million from Q3 2010.
