A report has surfaced claiming Sony wants to end the ten-year relationship.
The flame is to be extinguished on one of mobile's long-running partnerships, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.
Sony and Ericsson have been working together creating mobile phones since 2001 but with Apple and Android handsets dominating the industry, Sony Ericsson has fallen behind.
Sony has seen success with games consoles like the PlayStation and the report says the firm now wants to tie smartphone production into its tablet and console business to aid development.
Cost saving is also said to be a contributing factor for the move but in order to get to that stage, it is expected the deal could cost upwards of $1.3 billion according to a JP Morgan analyst.
Mami Imada, a Sony spokeswoman, said: "The talks are not something that have been announced by Sony. We are declining to comment."

Ericsson was also pretty tightlipped with a spokesperson for the firm saying, "We have a long-term commitment to our joint ventures."
