Sony Ericsson faces the music

Downbeat 2Q08 financials force Swedish handset giant to make redundancies ahead of Walkman anniversary.

Sony Ericsson president Dick Komiyama has promised that his company will 'sharpen its portfolio' after a slump in 2Q profits and an admission that it has too many similar devices.

On Friday the company confirmed its 2Q08 pre-tax profits had fallen (in line with expectations) to eight million euros, down from 327 million euros in 2Q07. It promptly announced plans to cut 17 per cent of its workforce.

Speaking to the FT, Komiyama said: "We will define our own strategy... there is a lot of work to be done."

Tomorrow SE will be unveiling its 'next generation' of Walkman handsets to the world's press to coincide with the product line's third anniversary.

In 2Q08 SE sold 24.4 million handsets, down half a million units from 2Q07.
