Sony and Nintendo respond to iPad threat

Not bovvered.

When Apple unveiled its iPad tablet last week, gaming was flagged as one of the key uses - prompting speculation that the device was another threat to Sony and Nintendo's PSP and DS.

Now the two companies have responded with studied nonchalance, as you might expect.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said the launch delivered "no surprises", and labeled the device simply "a bigger iPod touch".

Meanwhile, Sony's PlayStation hardware boss John Koller said that the iPad, like the iPhone, will boost sales of Sony's PSP.

"Apple's entrance into the portable gaming space has been a net positive for Sony... When people want a deeper, richer console, they start playing on a PSP."

However, iPad arguably isn't a direct competitor to either the DS or PSP - or indeed the Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360. It could find a different audience of casual sofa-gamers.

(Especially if it runs Farmville).

You can bet that behind closed doors, neither company is taking quite as ostrich-like an approach to iPad and its potential impact as their public statements imply.
