Sony accelerates move away from DRM

Is this the death of DRM? Sony BMG has become the final major label to sell DRM-free music on Amazon.com.

The move would appear to accelerate the market drift away from DRM in the US and position Amazon's digital music store as even greater legitimate threat to Apple's iTunes storefront.

Amazon MP3 was launched in September 2007, and features over 3.1 million songs from more than 270,000 artists. It was supported by Universal and EMI from launch and Warner in December. Amazon tracks range from 89 cents to more than a dollar, and can be played on any portable music device.

The progress of Amazon is sure to be watched by the myriad of mobile music providers currently jostling for market positiom.
