Social location service SCVNGR tops 1m users

Check-ins mixed with challenges has been a formula for growth so far.

It might not have the profile of Foursquare or Facebook Places, but social location startup SCVNGR has nevertheless signed up its one millionth user.

The service launched its first apps in May last year, and has signed up a succession of partners to create branded challenges around its check-ins, getting people to earn rewards at specific locations.

SCVNGR's user base is still some way behind Foursquare's, with nearly seven million people registered for the latter. However, as VentureBeat points out, as recently as April last year, Foursquare had only just passed the one million milestone itself.

SCVNR recently announced a new $15 million funding round, led by European VC firm Balderton Capital.
