Social location service Rummble nabs $800k funding round

Plans to give its app's user interface a makeover.

UK-based social location service Rummble has announced an $800,000 funding round from m8 Capital.

Joe Kim of m8 will be joining Rummble's board as chairman as part of the deal. It's the first investment from the London-based VC firm.

Rummble's social location app takes a different approach to Foursquare and the like - it focuses as much on nearby places as people, offering recommendations.

CEO Andrew Scott says the new funding will be used to make the app easier to use, having spent its previous angel funding on the core technology.

"We've been trying to do way too much with just six people and the user interface has suffered," he says.

"Now that we can hire we're looking for awesome UI/Ux designers and software engineers in both London and San Francisco. Our Trust Graph technology and API are very powerful and we're eager to deliver that power into users hands."

Rummble's app is currently available for iPhone and Android, and also has a mobile web version.

The app had around 120,000 users when ME last spoke to Scott in March this year.

Rummble is also experimenting with distributing QR codes to venues to make it easier for visitors to check-in using its app.

It started in Amsterdam in late April, and will soon roll out the idea in London too, according to Scott.
