Winner gets $5,000 and a Big Ass Chain.
iPhone developer Smule has announced a contest to promote its music app I Am T-Pain, based around the release of the downloadable track 'I'm On a Boat'.
The song, by a trio of Saturday Night Live comedians but featuring rapper T-Pain, has been a huge viral hit on YouTube. Now users of Smule's app can sing along to it using the same AutoTune technology as T-Pain himself.
The contest involves people uploading a video of themselves singing along to the track, with Smule looking for “eccentricity bordering on creativity”. It will run over ten weeks, with one finalist being chosen each week.
They'll each win $500, but the overall winner will then get $5,000 plus a “Big Ass Chain” weighing 10 pounds. To spare your blushes, we'll clarify with a hyphen that this is a Big-Ass Chain.
It's a nifty way to promote an already-popular iPhone app – I Am T-Pain has sold 300,000 copies since its launch three weeks ago. Its price is being dropped to $0.99 to tie in with the contest.

Smule launched a similar competition for one of its previous iPhone apps, Ocarina, earlier this year.
