Smule boss slams Ovi Store's moneymaking potential

But is the company missing a trick by ruling out Nokia handsets?

iPhone developer Smule isn't looking to launch any of its apps on Nokia's Ovi Store, judging by comments from its CEO Jeff Smith.

"Nokia isn’t on the shortlist of anything we do at Smule because we don’t think we can make any money," he said at last week's Billboard Music & Money conference. "Our approach to Nokia’s store is, ‘Show me the money'."

Smule is the company behind music apps Ocarina, Leaf Trombone and I Am T-Pain. It's sold millions of downloads on the App Store, and appeared on-stage at Apple keynotes.

It's a sign of just how much work Nokia has to do if it wants to court the new breed of mobile developers based on the west coast of the US.

That's something acknowledged by Nokia's head of music Liz Schimel, who was in the same conference session as Smith: "We haven’t won your heart today, but that’s the plan."

Smule could be accused of being too focused on its home market, though. Nokia isn't seen as a significant player in the US smartphone market, but it still sold 67.7 million smartphones globally in 2009, according to Strategy Analytics.

If Smule isn't making innovative music apps for those people, you can bet other companies will.

Ovi Store is undoubtedly poorer for the absence of developers like Smule, but those firms could be missing out on revenues in the future as Nokia's store scales around the world.
