Consolidation in the wacky social music app space.
Smule is the company that has made some of the most innovative music-making apps in the space – like Ocarina, which lets you blow into the mic to create other worldly sounds.
Now it's made its first acquisition, swooping for Khush, which is probably best known for Songify. This is a product that turns spoken words into songs, and has been downloaded more than 5m times.
It's reckoned that the two firms have collectively shipped 35m apps, all on iPS devices.
"These folks have very creative technology that opens up music creation to everyone," said Jeff Smith, Smule's co-founder and CEO.
"That's a goal we share between the companies. Our goal is to ultimately democratise the creation and distribution of music - put these tools into a billion people's hands and see what they do with it."
