SMS - unglamorous but still growing

Portio: Worldwide SMS revenues will almost double in the next five years.

Portio Research's report ‘Mobile Messaging Futures 2008 – 2013’  says traffic volumes and revenues will confound predictions to grow from $130 billion in 2008 to $224 billion by 2013 - that's 60 per cent of non-voice service revenues.

SMS remains ‘king’ because there is no cheap, easy to use messaging alternative that will work with all phones and across all networks.  That said, Portio also predicts a bright future for mobile email even though Japan is the only market where consumer mobile e-mail has surpassed the use of SMS. It says mobile e-mail users worldwide will quadruple from approximately a 250 million in 2008 to over a billion users by the end of 2013.

Meanwhile mobile instant messaging is still beset by the technical problems of interoperability. But mobile IM users will grow from 111 million users in 2008 to hit a massive 867 million users by the close of 2013.
