SMS GupShup raises $12m

India-based social network targets global market after Series D funding round.

Latest round led by Globespan Capital Partners includes follow-on financing from Charles River Ventures & Helion Venture Partners

SMS GupShup uses one-to-one and one-to-many text messaging to let users build communities around messaging. The firm was launched in April 2007, and now serves 26 million users in over two million sms communities. These communities range from religious groups to sports teams to fan clubs of celebrities.

Over 100 advertisers currently run on the network including local insurance provider ICICI Lombard and international brands like Puma, Microsoft and Cadbury. A few thousand SMEs are deploying GupShup’s mobile messaging solutions for business purposes.

The company claims five per cent of all text messages sent in India. Earlier this year, it inked a deal with Facebook to enable Indian Facebook users to go mobile.
