Nokia still global leader, but RIM and Apple are on the rise.

38.1 million smartphones were shipped in the second quarter of this year, according to analyst firm Canalys. That represents 13.4% growth year-on-year.

Nokia remains the global leader with a 44.3% market share, followed by Research In Motion's 20.9%. However, Apple is the big grower, with a 13.7% market share in Q2 this year, compared to 2.1% in the same quarter of 2008.

"Apple has revolutionised the smartphone sector, leapfrogging more experienced rivals," says senior analyst Pete Cunningham.

"The competition must move much faster to close the gap in terms of functionality and design, and at the same time try to target Apple's weak spots."

According to Canalys, Nokia remains top dog in Europe with a 64% market share, although Apple has stormed above RIM into second place with 13.6%.

In the US, RIM remains in the lead with a 52% market share, followed by Apple's 23.3% and HTC some way behind with 5.6%. In Asia, Nokia is the runaway leader with a 59.7% share.

Canalys also breaks down the smartphone market by operating system, suggesting that of the 38.1 million smartphones shipped in Q2 this year, 50.3% were Symbian, 20.9% were BlackBerry, and 13.7% were iPhones.

Microsoft's Windows Mobile is fourth with a 9% market share, followed by Android's 2.8%.
