Improved tech, intuitive interfaces, social networks and partnerships expected to drive the numbers.
UK-based analyst firm Juniper Research has predicted mVoIP client downloads for smartphones will account for 80 per cent of 640 million mobile VoIP users.
The firm claims user awareness, improved technology and interfaces will be the reason for the dominance of mVoIP in apps.
VoIP specialists are looking at expansion via partnerships with social media, gaming and software companies, according to the report.
Juniper says as social media becomes more accepted, voice will grow within other communications to change the market. Examples include Microsoft's purchase of Skype as Facebook is set to forge alliances with a number of VoIP providers.
Anthony Cox, Juniper Research, said: "Eventually voice may become one of several options in an environment where multiple methods of communicating are possible on the same platform."
