Sleepydog: "Publishers are worried about selling iPhone e-books too cheaply"

Stuart Dredge
Sleepydog:

That's why the UK firm has started with out-of-print books for its new venture.

UK firm Sleepydog has released its first batch of iPhone e-books for children on the App Store, starting with out-of-print titles to avoid conflict with publishers.

"Out of print is a great place to start, not least because we don’t get into conflict with the publishers about pricing," CEO Toby Moores tells ME, although the next phase will involve deals with publishers.

"By the time the ink dries on contracts, we and the publishers should have a good understanding of pricing. Their main concern is selling e-books too cheaply, hence undermining the value of their printed books."

Sleepydog is selling its e-books - including four titles based on the popular Vernon Bright series - for £1.19 each in the UK App Store.

The company says it's not just focused on iPhone users, but iPod touch owners as well. For the full Sleepydog interview, click here.
