Skyhook survey reveals Android developer dissatisfaction

60% not happy with their profits from Google's smartphone platform.

A survey by location-based technology firm Skyhook Wireless has shed more light on increasing unrest among Android developers at the revenues being generated by paid apps on Android Market.

Skyhook canvassed more than 30 developers, and found that nearly 60% reported that they are not satisfied with the profits they're making on Android.

82% of those said that the reason was Android Market's design, which they think isn't helping users to find their apps.

43% of developers highlighted Android's use of the Google Checkout payment system to buy apps, and said they would make more money if Google used carrier billing or a simpler payment platform.

Meanwhile, 46% of the developers were worried about Android fragmentation, as more handsets come out all using different versions of the Android OS.

The survey adds useful context to the recent controversy around comments by Gameloft about Android's viability as a platform - which were swiftly followed by a company statement reaffirming its support for the OS.

Research by ME found that rival EA Mobile has also been muted so far in its release schedule for Android. Both companies are likely to have the same issues in mind as Skyhook's developers.

Android is certainly picking up momentum at the moment with handset makers, but it seems Google has more work to do to ensure developers are equally enthused about its platform and store.
