Broadcaster adds wi-fi to its TV/broadband/mobile offering.
The deal, for an undisclosed sum, gives Sky ownership of over 5,000 public wi-fi locations across the UK. Clearly, the firm will now look to integrate this network with its existing broadband services.
Sky recently claimed to be the "fastest broadband growth in ten quarters with 204,000 net additions".
Previously, O2 had a partnership with The Cloud that gave its mobile broadband users free access to its network.
However, the operator has now revealed that it will offer free O2 wi-fi to any user irrespective of their phone network as long as they sign up.
Not sure about the business model here, but the move is clearly designed to relieve pressure on the 3G network and give O2 a nice database of data-hungry phone users.
