But it remains free for Sky TV subscribers.
The Sky News app was launched for free in March, but the plan was always to charge a subscription fee.
Now that figure has been confirmed, with the iTunes Store taking its usual 30 per cent cut.
Clearly, Sky is happier to share revenue back to Apple than another big media name, Financial Times, which last week withdrew its app from the store in protest at the ongoing subscription fees.
However, the widely held belief is that Sky's real intention here is not necessarily to drive £4.99 purchases but to make its over Sky TV package more valuable.
The app will be free to these TV subscribers, much like its sister app for sports, Sky Go.
