Korean salvation for bankrupt video retailer?

The FT reports that the South Korean operator is mulling the purchase in order to boost its overseas content interests in the face of a stagnant domestic market.

Blockbuster would be an interesting one. It filed for bankruptcy in September 2010 after falling behind in the movie retailing space.

It had reigned supreme when rentals were physical, with 2,500 retail outlets, but it failed to launch online services to rival Amazon, NetFlix and LoveFilm.

Its own interactive services, like Blockbuster On Demand, were too little too late.

But the firm has a strong brand and lines into Hollywood, so you can see why purchasers might be hovering, even if SK's specific intentions remain unclear.

SK Telecom has 24 million subs at home, and has announced plans to invest $907 million over three years in overseas ventures.
