Six operators commit to Linux launches

DoCoMo, Orange, SK Telecom, Telefónica, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone will all launch LiMo devices this year.

Six operator members of the LiMo (Linux Mobile) Foundation, which works towards the creation of an open mobile OS, have all confirmed they will launch devices based on the technology in 2009.

The group comprises NTT DoCoMo, Orange, SK Telecom, Verizon Wireless, Vodafone and Telefonica (which confirmed its membership to the LiMo board today).

Last week Vodafone selected Azingo as a development partner for applications based on the LiMo platform.

The idea behind LiMo is to create an open source mobile OS alternative to the likes of Symbian (itself on the path to open source), Apple, Google Android (also Linux-based), Microsoft and RIM.

More operators are expected to cofirm LiMo launches, with KTF, SFR, Softbank, Swisscom and Telecom Italia all LiMo members.
