M-money consortium Simpay has added two new operator members and is set to launch in Spain by the summer. UK and Belgian launches are pencilled for the fourth quarter.
Simpay was founded in 2003 by Orange , Telefonica Moviles, T-Mobile and Vodafone to create a mobile payments standard that would allow small ticket items to be bought and paid for via the phone bill, across the mobile Internet.
At present such items can only be bought from a network portal (by a subscriber to that particular network) or by premium SMS. Spain 's Amena and Belgium 's Proximus are the new signatories to Simpay, meaning the scheme now has members in 20 European countries. The expected launch will embrace 70 million mobile consumers across Europe . Simpay believes its initiative can create E1 billion of extra industry revenue by 2007.
