Sidebar set to launch smartphone recommendations app

An app that recommends other apps? There's an app for that! Or soon will be, anyway.

US startup Sidebar is the latest company to try to improve the mobile applications discovery process.

It's launching, yes, an app, which will provide personalised recommendations of apps and content to users, based on their personal data and preferences.

According to TechCrunch, Sidebar will recommend no more than 12 recommendations a day, including apps, videos, games, music, ringtones, podcasts and news articles.

The application will be free, and thus presumably funded by a mixture of advertising and affiliate fees from content bought by its users.

Sidebar is due to launch for iPhone, BlackBerry and Android by Christmas. Although more iPhone owners are likely to use Apple's own Genius recommendation feature, the apps explosion means Sidebar should find an audience quickly - if its recommendations are good, of course.
