Shazam's bands to watch in 2009

Mobile music discovery specialist predicts who's going to be topping the charts this year.

Shazam has compiled a list of the bands it thinks will be big in 2009 based on the songs being 'tagged' by its UK users.

Kid Cudi sits on top of the list, which Shazam attributes to the success of his song Day & Night and a guest spot on Kanye West’s album. Lady Gaga is in at number two with Just Dance and Australia's Empire Of The Sun third.

The company argues its list is more representative of public opinion than critic-based lists such as the BBC's Sound of 2009.

Last year Shazam accurately predicted Duffy and the Ting Tings as two acts to watch.

Shazam’s Head of Music Will Mills said: “Music fans are making their voices heard and are as important as the critics in deciding which acts will do the business in 2009. Indeed, Shazam’s users do validate some of the critic’s choices but they also show much more diversity in the acts they’re tipping for success.”
