Shazam LyricPlay goes free on Android and iOS

Karaoke addicts can singalong accurately without charge.

The music discovery app's LyricPlay platform launched in June and works in a similar way to the song recognition feature.

When a user holds their mobile next to the music they're listening to the app will produce the lyrics on the phone's screen.

Previously LyricPlay was only available to iOS users via Shazam Encore and Red premium apps but the Shazam says the feature will be free to all users on the iOS and Android Markets.

Alex Musil, Shazam’s EVP Product, said: "Since the launch of LyricPlay in June for people with our premium apps on iOS, we’ve seen them embrace this innovative feature as an entertaining way to interact with the songs they love.

"Given its popularity, we wanted all people with iOS and Android-powered devices to have access to LyricPlay as we deliver a richer music experience. No other app offers synchronised lyrics with animation like Shazam does, showing lyrics in a distinctive way as they slide and scroll across the screen giving a magical extended experience to people using our service."

Users with the app will receive the new feature when they update and for those with 3D Android devices they will be enabled to use LyricPlay in 3D.

LyricPlay isn't Shazam's only giveaway as the firm recently provided free iOS app users with unlimited song tagging. A significant difference from what was limited to just five tags per month.

LyricPlay is available in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, Italy, Germany and Spain.
