Shazam hits 20m users

Music discovery specialist expects its services to be available on 250 million handsets by the end of 2009.

Shazam's mobile music discovery tools are now being used by 20 million people around the world, with more than a hundred million songs identified since its launch six years ago.

The company says it expects to hit 200 million idents 'soon' and is on course to have its services accessible from more than 250 million handsets by the end of 2009.

Shazam initially offered an IVR service whereby users could identify an unknown song by holding their handset up to the speaker it's playing through.

Now the company uses that initial hook to offer the user a whole raft of options, including the ability to buy the track and download it directly to the phone or share the discovery with friends.

Shazam CEO Andrew Fisher said: “We are seeing consumer adoption of Shazam increase dramatically and believe that music recognition will become a ubiquitous feature on mobile phones. By working closely with industry leading handset manufacturers and carriers Shazam is now embedded in tens of millions of handsets worldwide and we expect that by the end of 2009 Shazam will be available on more than 250 million devices.”
